The Wedding Day Flower Guide

The Wedding Day Flower Guide

On your wedding day, uniqueness is divulged in the details, and your flowers are a sure way to reflect your style and individuality. Be as traditional or as unusual as you like, but be imaginative to create arrangements that exhibit your day’s style. Choosing the perfect flowers is easy with the right budget, a capable florist and positive vision.

Budget:
The vast range of flowers available means arrangement possibilities are endless, but before you get stuck on one idea for your dream blossoms, it’s important to set a budget. Wedding planners often recommend around 8% of your total wedding budget be allocated to flowers. If this limits your dream flowers, get creative about the budgeting! First of all, try to choose flowers in season; they’re cheaper and more fragrant. Generally flowers blossom in the following seasons: Spring: tulips, hyacinths, freesia, daffodils, fruit blossoms, muscari and lilac.

Summer: roses, sweet peas, peonies, sunflowers, hydrangeas and lily of the valley.

Autumn: amaryllis, snowberry, calla lily, lavender, chrysanthemum, euphorbia and orchids. Secondly, bridesmaid bouquets are generally smaller than the bride’s, which makes them cheaper, or alternatively they can wear a wrist corsage instead of carrying a bouquet. Next, choose a beautiful location for your wedding that doesn’t need extra floral decoration. Perth is full of gorgeous parks! Finally, if there’s a delivery fee for the florist, why not ask a friend to pick flowers up and transfer them to where they’re needed?

The Skilful Florist:
Choosing your florist is important; you need to feel confident in their skill, happy with their prices and find it easy to communicate what it is you want. Although florists are experts in their fields, try not to be too swayed by their opinions on your flowers. Be open, but order what you envision. If you have the time, shop around for the best price and look at florists’ previous work to ensure you enjoy it. When you do choose the right florist, ask them questions. Frame them around specific ideas. These ideas could be in the form of photos you like, examples of your colour scheme or textures you enjoy. These will all, of course, depend on your vision for the day.

The Vision:
Do you want a day characterised by romantic classicism, vintage glamour, funky modernity, bohemianism, beachy casualness or foreign culture? Whatever it is you want, tie your flowers in. From colour schemes to bouquet style, your flowers can fit your vision. Of course, the vision often revolves around the dress. Make sure your flowers complement it. In terms of your colour scheme, it seems obvious to match the flowers themselves to your colours, but why not go a step further and wrap the stems in the colour of your bridesmaid dresses? There are many ways your bouquet can be presented; the rounded posy, the natural strauss, the trailing fountain, the armspray, the teardrop and the cascade are all possible options depending on your style. On top of bouquets, you have the option of using flowers to decorate your reception and ceremony. You can use as many or as few flowers as suits you, but the following options are a basic guide as to where you can add some freshness and colour:

Reception: the entrance, the Bridal table, the Guest tables as centrepieces, the Cake table, the Buffet table, the gift table or corners of the room.

Ceremony Flowers: the entrance, the altar, the aisle, the pews or chairs or the signing table.

Bridal Party: Bridal bouquet, bridesmaid bouquets, flowergirl bouquet, groom’s buttonhole, groomsmen’s buttonholes and parents’ corsages.

Now go forth and choose your flowers!
Be confident in choosing something unique to you and your partner. If you’re still in need of a little inspiration, another option may be silk flowers, which look great in photographs and remain with you as a tangible memory. Think outside the box; experiment with unusual textures and styles. Try native flowers, silk flowers or even feather bouquets. Express yourselves, embrace originality and above all, have fun!
